2010 Zumba Instructor Convention - Aqua Zumba™ Boost

This year there were two classes geared toward Aqua Zumba™ instructors. One was the day-long Aqua Zumba instructor training workshop. The other was a 3 hour "Aqua Zumba Boost" session specifically for those who were already licensed to teach Aqua Zumba.

Since I had already taken the Aqua Zumba workshop twice in the past 12 months I decided to skip it at the convention this year, so I don't have much information about if/how the workshop has changed. I did, however, attend the boost session.

Here is a brief review of my experience at the Aqua Zumba Boost session.

1. Zumba Formula - We received more information on how to break down Mega Mix songs and choreograph them for Aqua Zumba.

2. Instructor technique - Maria explained and demonstrated how to move the body in order to appear to fight buoyancy instead of gravity. Not only does this make the moves easier for the students to understand, but it helps to force the instructor to reduce their jumping.

3. Hands-On Training - The class was small, about 25 people, and ZES’s Maria and Madeline (??) walked around correcting our form and giving us feedback while we worked in teams to create choreography. In my opinion this was profoundly helpful and reassuring!!

4. Master Class/October DVD Preview - Not only was the master class in the pool a lot of fun, but it was the exact same choreography that would be in the DVD we all get in October. That made me SO happy because then I could enjoy the class without worrying about notes.

I am not sure what will be offered at the convention next year or if things will stay the same, but if they offer the Aqua Boost again I hope this information helps some of you decide whether or not to sign up for it.

Written Choreo

o = Intro

A = two cumbia side steps (leaps) to the right with assisting arms, then two leaps to the left with assisting arms. TEMPO = very slow! 1/2 water tempo. One leap for every 4 beats of music. This is a Level 2 move.

P = fast hand chops in the water at 1 or 2x land tempo. Slice the water for the least amount of resistance. Both feet are planted firmly on the floor of the pool. This is a grounded move.

O = Rotate/isolate the hips and stomp one foot while traveling similar to land tempo. This is a grounded move. Make sure the class is not floating or up on their toes otherwise they will not have enough traction to travel. (R) means travel to the right (L) means travel to the left "Circle" means stand in place and do a cumbia stomp turn OUT in the direction you were already traveling, not in like we do on land. You will hear/feel all this in the music. Don't stress over when to switch legs or when to turn.

Video (Will be added in a few days or as soon as I find out what the kids did with the batteries! hah)

o = single, single, double side steps with assisting arms (if the class has trouble with this suggest that they move to shallower water)

X = twist jump (single single double) the class keeps their torso still and the focus is on pushing the legs down not on jumping as you will on the deck

K = alternating lunge with hand push down

A = leg lifts to the side (alternate right and left like a slow tick-tock)

R = hop on the right leg to the right (The class hops and moves to the right, but in the video I demonstrate how to stand in one spot and not hop)

L = hop on the left leg to the left

Z = Like part "A" but twice the speed and smaller range of motion.

I = intro - Slalom in place with a tuck to the beat of the music. (8)

O = front step with the right, middle step with the left, back step with the right. Arms open out when the right foot is down. (1/2 tempo to the music). For more intensity propel. For less intensity decrease range of motion, and do not propel. Switch and do it on the left side. (8 with the right leg leading, the 8 with the left leg leading)

A= in a wide leg stance push down with both feet to the beat of the music (like mini wide-legged tuck jumps) while slowly turning in a circle. Repeat and turn in the other direction.

X = twisting tuck jumps

B = raise hands over the head and swirl them around while gyrating the hips

C = double hops right and left with knee lifts, "swim" the arms forward in a groovy manner

/ = scissors with the arms in the water, with open palms for more resistance, single single double. For less resistance flex the arms more. For more resistance extend the arms further from the body.

V = hop on the left leg, while the right leg lifts up and swings in a arc to the front, side, back position. Switch and repeat this on the right leg. The movement is front, middle, back, down, front middle, back, down on the beat.

Written Choreography

A= move forward and backward with hop kicks, with arms assisting the direction of movement.

B= Standard water tempo jog with wide legs. Standard alternating arms. For more detail on the arms: they are flexed at the elbows, moving parallel to the ground from front to back along the transverse plane (oh yes, I went there) along with the supporting leg.

C= 3 wide-leg tuck jumps (lyrics: here we go) with a cross turn to the left (lyrics: allez allez allez!) Switch the direction of the turn based on your class's coordination, but make sure you do alternate it at least once to work both sides.

# = SHAKE IT with feet firmly planted on the ground.

Title: Juana Polinaria

Album: ZIN Volume 25 (Available to licensed Zumba© instructors who were ZIN members at the time of release). This song is available on iTunes but it does not match the version I use for the song pattern below.

Song Pattern: I hear 5/6 different phases to the song. It's possible this is off, but this is pretty close. I recommend not counting, but just using this pattern for a one-time glance at the basic flow.

O O O O O O O O

O O O O O O O O

O O O O O O

For the Choreography I do not use a pattern at all because the drums are so steady. I watch my class and change based on their effort and reactions. I alternate between 3 different steps.

Step 1.

Kick to the right with the right leg while pushing the arms to the left. Kick behind with the right leg while pushing the arms forward.

Kick to the left with the left leg while pushing the arms to the right. Kick behind with the left leg while pushing the arms forward.

Step 2.

Step touch to the right at the tempo of the music using the arms in a swimming motion to aid movement in that direction. The hips thrust in the direction of the movement. If your class is strong do less on each side so that they have to spend more time fighting the inertia of the water. I alternate between 4 and 8.

Do the same for the left side.

Step 3. Stand in place just as Tanya does in the ZIN 25 DVD with one foot slightly in front of the other and move the legs and the hips at either land tempo or water tempo. The difference in the water is that the legs do not have to work as hard, but the core has to work harder.

Hecha Pa'Lante (Belly Dance/Reggaeton)

Song Information

Title: Hecha Pa'Lante
Album: Available on the Aqua Zumba™ Review CD and on iTunes. The iTunes version is also by Zumba Fitness.

Song Pattern

For this particular song it was easier for me to just give each segment one letter. For my AZ class I cut this song in half and do only one or two types of choreography per segment. I think with counting segment A goes to 20 (beats?) and segment B goes to 48, but I do not count. I just change my choreography when the music changes.

I use the version from the Aqua Zumba™ DVD so no written choreography or video with this. "A" is the segment where they do little side hip thrusts. Just listen for the music changes, it's really obvious in this song.

Written Choreography

This is so fun and it will really get their heart rate going!

Y Y Y Y= skate, skate, jack out, jack in. "skate" is like an ice skating move with a lunge front and back with alternating arms.

O O O O = skate, skate, jack out, jack in (with a turn to the LEFT) note: music is the same as Y but more intense Also advanced students may want to add in a tuck. skate, tuck, skate, tuck, jack out, tuck, jack in with a turn. Arms swish to the right to assist with turning.

A A A A = skate, skate, jack out, jack in (with a turn to the RIGHT) note: music is the same as Y but more intense Also advanced students may want to add in a tuck. skate, tuck, skate, tuck, jack out, tuck, jack in with a turn. Arms swish to the left to assist with turning.

X X X X = slalom left, tuck, slalom right, tuck (a slalom is where legs remain closed and both legs jump to the right or left while holding the arms out straight, similar to down hill skiing.)

in the works...

Today I worked on Tambourine and Juana Polinaria from ZIN 25 in the pool. I pulled a muscle so I am not going to record them today, so I can rest. I hope to have them up for you all by this weekend. They are a ton of fun! And don't worry I'm not including the choreo that I was doing when I injured myself. LOL

Song Information

Title: Put Your Drink Down
Album: Zumba Fitness© Mega Mix 125 (Available to licensed Zumba© instructors who were ZIN members at the time of release). Song Pattern

and so on...

Written Choreo and Video (there are two video's with this, part AB, and then C)

Even though this song is almost 8 minutes long it doesn't get boring if you build the intensity with the music. Also it will take the class a few sets to pick up the pattern and then get into it. I use this song as a warm up.

A = 1/2 tempo aqua jog for 4 beats then center jog with a bounce and a high knee for 4 beats.

B = Make sure both feet are placed firmly on the floor of the pool. Arms open up for 4 beats and then shimmy the chest for 4 beats. Next Arms close for 4 beats and then do a little boogie dance for 4 beats.

**Option** You can alternate A and B in whatever order you like. If the water is cold do more As than Bs. If the water is really warm do more B. Our pool is around 83 so I do 3 sets of A for every 1 set of B.

Video for parts A and B.

Continue with this pattern until the music changes.

C = After several minutes there is a change in the music from 3:47 until 4:28. At this point I do a ski with a tuck in the middle (ski, tuck, ski, tuck).

Video for part C, demonstrated on one leg.

Then return to alternating A and B until the song ends.

Symbol key for my version of the choreo

INTRO: standard 1/2 tempo water jog from side to side

- - - - : Destroza for 8 counts in one direction. Then 8 counts in the other direction. **The deeper they are then the closer their legs need to be together.** For example, if water is shoulder level then it will look more like a march with a side hip thrust. Try it in the water and you will see what I mean. Arms swish out to help the body circle.

| | X X: Tuck jump with both legs for two beats then push down with both legs in a wide leg position for two beats.

+ + + +: Hop on one foot while the opposite knee comes up high for two beats, then switch feet.

\ / \ /: Lunges with a propel and pushing down with an open palm. For lower intensity, have the class make a fist and ommit the propel.

M M M M: swirl the water with the hands in an S shape

W W W W: SPANK IT! Nice and slow.

# # # #: Shake the booty football jog style. Yes this can be done in the water!

La Cumbia (Cumbia)

I love doing this one because it is easy on my body and the class has to work really hard, especially after the first side-step. Once the inertia of the water takes over it is a lot of work to move against it. Also it took a few weeks for my class to get over their flabby arm fears and just stick their hands in the air, but keep doing it. The music will eventually compel them to reach up and clap!

Symbol Key:

X = March in place clapping to the beat with the hands in the air.

} = Side step Cumbia ("I'm a Little Teapot" arms) to the right. For a more difficult version turn the torso in the direction you are traveling, instead of toward the class.

{ = Side step Cumbia ("I'm a Little Teapot" arms) to the left. For a more difficult version turn the torso in the direction you are traveling, instead of toward the class.

U = Plant feet firmly on the pool floor and swish the arms in a large arc. For participants with shoulder problems "swish" with the elbows held close to the body.

Nunca Me Viste (Latin Disco)

Song Information

Title: Nunca Me Viste
Album: Aqua Zumba™ Review (You must be a licensed Aqua Zumba™ instructor to obtain this album).

Song Pattern

This pattern is based on the choreography in the DVD and is meant as a visual aid to instructors who already have access to the choreography. I had a hard time memorizing all of the different movements but when I broke it down into patterns it was much easier to count, hear, and memorize. Since I use the choreo from the DVD I will not post any written choreography or video for this song.

Each row is 8 beats of music. To help you find your place "M" is where we do the "shakey shakey" part for four counts before switching to the jacks at "N" for four counts.

Song Information

Title: Chorando se Foi
Album: Zumba Fitness© Mega Mix 15 (Only available to licensed Zumba© instructors who were ZIN members at the time of release). Chorando se Foi is also available from other albums but those may be different from the version I used.

Symbol Key:

X = Arms alternate pushing forward, and then to the side (push the water forward with the right palm, push the water forward with the left palm, push the water to the right side with the right palm, push the water to the left side with the left palm, etc...) Legs move in a standard wide leg aquatic jog.

O = Very slow Lambada, about 1/4 the usual Lambada tempo. Legs alternate right, left, right... left, right left. Hips are engaged pushing away from the body on the supporting leg. Arms are slightly flexed at the elbow, and wrists rotate in a breast stroke motion.

# = The Lambada continues, however on the fourth beat the free leg remains extended and crosses the body, working the inner and outer thigh. The arms continue as above however during the fourth beat the arm on the same side as the crossing leg pushes through the water in the opposite direction.
